June is National Indigenous History Month—a time of remembrance, recognition, and renewal.
At Kebaonish, we believe this month is more than a calendar observance, it’s a call to action rooted in place and responsibility. That’s why we’re launching our most meaningful campaign yet: a Give-Back Month in support of Indigenous language revitalization to raise $10,000 for community-led programs delivered right here in our territory.
A percentage of proceeds from this campaign will directly support Tsi Tyónnheht Onkwawén:na (pronounced Gee Dee Yee Own Het Own Gwa Wen Nah) (TTO), a trusted language and culture organization located nearby Kebaonish on Tyendinaga Mohawk Territory. Learn more about TTO.
This connection is personal, local, and powerful. Kebaonish and TTO are both rooted in the same community, working together to restore, protect, and celebrate the voices of the land.
Why Language? Why Now?
Language is more than words. It’s a worldview. It’s how we relate to the land, to one another, and the sacred.
For Indigenous Peoples, language holds stories, songs, teachings, and laws, our entire identity is encoded in it. When we lose our languages, we don’t just lose vocabulary, we lose ways of knowing, relating, and governing.
When we reclaim our languages,
- We reclaim dignity, purpose, and sovereignty.
- We reawaken generations of wisdom.
- We root our communities in pride, responsibility, and resilience.
This is the heart of cultural revitalization and it’s essential not only to Indigenous Nationhood but to the Canada we all aspire to build: a country grounded in truth, diversity, and mutual respect.
The Focus: Adult Language Learners
We’re directing $2 from every bag of coffee sold in June toward adult language programs because adults are the most powerful transmitters of knowledge. They are parents, aunties, uncles, grandparents, and community leaders. When they reclaim the language, it returns home—to the dinner table, into ceremonies, on the land, and into the daily lives of children.
It starts with one speaker. Then, a household. Then, a Nation.
